The seller of this recently restored 1. The Cabriolet A body and interior constructed at – ’ in-house Karrosserie adjacent to the great 500K/540Ks was one of six body styles offered in the smaller . The Cab A was the most sporting and most costly of the 170Vs. The restored example presents very strongly in the photos provided, with no modifications made from original.
The 170V engine is a 1.7-liter L-head inline-four with a single Solex carburetor, mated with a four-speed manual transmission to deliver power to the rear wheels. The engine was rated with 38 DIN horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 74 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm when new. The seller states that the engine is original to this car, and was rebuilt during the recent restoration. The engine is reported to start from cold with “no smoke and a proper idle.” The transmission “shifts smoothly” according to the seller. “No leaks or weeps” are reported. The 7-mile odometer reading is post-restoration. The actual mileage is unknown.
The red and black finish is described by the seller as “very good quality, with no blemishes.” All trim appears to be complete and highly polished. The padded fabric folding top with working landau irons is said to seal tightly with the windshield and roll up side windows. “No leaks” are reported. The spare tire is mounted in the sloping rear deck, that also provides a narrow luggage compartment. All lights “function properly,” and the semaphore turn indicators mounted in the cowl are shown to work. No rust is said to be present following the restoration.
The red leather interior has also been completely restored to original condition, per the seller. All materials used to restore the seats, door and interior panels, and carpet are new, and all surfaces appear to be finished to a very high standard. A tight V-shaped additional seat behind the front passenger allows for an additional passenger, presumably for very short distances. The red and black leather-covered dashboard displays a full complement of black-on-ivory gauges and controls. All are stated by the seller to be in working order. All trim is complete, including a dome light in the fully finished headliner. The seller identifies no heater or radio.
The 170V undercarriage and suspension were advanced for their day, with a backbone frame and four-wheel independent suspension utilizing upper and lower transverse leaf springs at the front and rear swing-axles with coil springs. The unassisted steering is said to “steer straight, with no play in the wheel.” All suspension service, bushings, shocks and brakes were updated during the restoration, per the seller. The 5.50×16-inch tires are identified by the seller as “about three years old.”
