The styling design known as the Forward k was the brainchild of Chrysler’s head stylist Exner, it was in full swing by 1957 and the offering from was certainly among the best offerings!
This car here is a 1957 Custom yal Lancer 2dr top in two tone Flame d and Glacier . This car was purchased by my family over 20 yrs ago out of the desert Southwest and had just prior to our purchase undergone a complete repaint in the original colors. The paint to this day remains incredibly glossy and there’s little to no sign of any aging or defects.
The drivetrain is the factory 325ci Poly-head V8 with the original 4bbl carburetor putting out a facotry advertised 260hp through the dual exhaust pipes. The engine was resealed and repainted when the body was repainted but has never needed a rebuild or any major service. The transmission also performs flawlessly and shifts through all the gears like it was new! Performance from this engine is very impressive and certainly leads one to believe that maybe the power numbers were a tad underestimated to appease the lawyers. Chassis was just serviced, including fully rebuilt brakes and conversion to DOT-5 ke Fluid. Car needs nothing, drives like new, and is equipped with factory Power Steering, Power kes, and Power Windows!
The body is a dry and solid car originating from the area as far as I know. The repaint was performed professionally in the mid to late 1990’s and it was done to a very high level. Door jambs, trunk and hood areas were all treated with special care and attention. The trunk was relined with carpet at that time and the original spare tire location was also fitted with a custom cover. No sign of any rust that I can find means this is truely a bone-dry body!
The interior is almost 100% original. The seats, door panels, headliner, dash, etc… are all as the left the factory. Even the steering wheel is original and unmolested. It only suffers from one crack in the top half, but to recast the wheel would surely sacrifice it’s originality. The car also has the original d emergency brake handle, which is almost always worn to a dull black from sun and wear. sed on the condition of the drivetrain and these interior components, I believe the mileage to be accurate at only 47,280 miles since new! The door panels have been refurbished with factory-correct red vinyl/silver mylar from SMS, but I was able to re-use the original black patterned inserts.
The bumpers were rechromed at the time of the repaint in the 1990’s, but the rest of the brightwork around the car is all original and in exceptional condition. The glass also is all original and in great shape with no damaged panes.
This car has been in my family for most of my life and it has always been maintained and kept in top condition. It’s done road trips, car shows, and holiday photo shoots with ease. It was even featured on a tv segment of My Classic Car with Gage at the , SD, Nights car show. It’s a shining example of the Forward k styling and also happens to be the same color scheme as many dealership artwork and advertising of the ’57 model year.
Though it pains me, the time has come for this car to go to it’s next caretaker. I’m downsizing my car collection and this beauty sadly must go. It’s a perfect running and performing show-ready car, and that’s a rare thing in the car hobby.
