THE STUDEBAKER GOLDEN HAWK

Studebaker’s wk was a performance themed version of their standard wk Coupe, a personal luxury high-performance GT car from . The styling was essentially an evolution of the earlier Loewy designed cars from 1953, the Studebaker light and liner, with a raised hood and a large egg crate grille at the nose, and more prominent tailfins.

uced in 1956 as an alternative n luxury performance car to the Chrysler 300B, the wk put performance first, offered with the big Packard 352ci V8 delivering 275bhp. The resulting power-to-weight ratio gave the wk 0-60 times in the 7.8 second range and a top speed of roughly 125mph.

After Packard’s Michigan-based engine plant was leased as part of the winding down of that company’s operations, power switched to Studebaker’s 289ci V8 for the 1957 model year, aided by the addition of a McCulloch supercharger also giving 275bhp. The wk became a popular n alternative sports car thanks to its combination of strong performance and Loewy lines.

THE STUDEBAKER GOLDEN HAWK OFFERED

This striking example of Studebaker’s wk was ordered on December 28, 1956 as a 1957 model, as confirmed by its original Studebaker-Packard Corporation Production er (SEE PHOTO) and delivered on January 03, 1957 to New , N . This wk was ordered to perhaps the most performance-oriented specification one could opt for. One of only 4,356 wks produced that year, it had the new high-performance Studebaker V8 with the VS 57 iable Speed McCulloch supercharger. It was factory equipped with the Flight-O- c 3-speed automatic transmission and a Twin-Traction posi-traction rear end, hydrovac power assisted 4 wheel finned drum brakes. The factory build sheet also confirms its original, elegant two-tone scheme of P 5736 Tiara d llic body with 5761A c Fins ——original color scheme and the proper colors it still wears to this day with one professional respray in 67 years. The interior retains it’s original sparkling nyl with black and metallic silver thread cloth inserts, which restorers cannot find. The original white headliner is in remarkable condition as well with working dome light and original padded sun visors. OE rner gauges (Speedometer, ter rature, Oil Pressure, Tachometer, oline, Amp meter, Vacuum) are pristine, bright white numbers and letters with proper black viewed through crystal clear lenses without fading mounted in the engine turned surrounds without denting or peeling, signs of correct care and storage over her entire life. Optional OE Clock, although not functioning. is stunning. AM Radio lights up, static but not functioning. Original black dash pad shines with no tears, ripples or fading. glove box opens and closes solid while the light functions. The optional chrome dual toline outside mirrors (driver and passenger) are mint. Factory tinted glass gleams without cracks, scratches or delaminating. All the factory lenses are original, lights work properly and bright. Headlights (low and high beam). turn signals, back up and brake lights are bright and function as new. This GH wk starts immediately, idles, runs, drives, brakes and shifts like a 29K mile car should, amazing for a 67 year old car. er, the rcharger was serviced professionally and functions perfectly while the factory Vacuum gauge is connected to monitor its performance.

While the wk was already the priciest car in the Studebaker lineup, more option boxes were ticked for power steering, power assisted finned drummed brakes,, and along with an electric clock in the dash, 7 tube AM pushbutton radio, interior controlled front fender mounted antenna, factory tinted glass, dual toline stainless and chrome exhaust deflectors, Climatizer heat/defrost and more. Even the original “curb signals” are intact. Drivers and passenger side chrome toline rors glisten with no cracking or delaminating. It is understood that this supercharged Studebaker has remained on the east coast, with copies of N and land documents for it’s entire life.

Its beautiful stainless and chrome brightwork is completely original, two-tone paint, stylish interior, white tailfins, and 15″ wheels with original wheel covers are shod in new whitewall radial tires give the true feeling of a luxury high-performance personal coupe; the sound of its supercharged V8 engine breathing through dual chrome/stainless exhaust extensions. Always professionally maintained, the engine was carefully tuned with new points, plugs, condenser and original hydrovac power assisted drum brakes were recently serviced, fluid flushed, new wheel cylinders . The original carburetor was professionally rebuilt and new water pump installed and cooling system flush performed. New fuel lines were replaced. She runs cool even in the hottest east coast heat wave. In addition to the correct and complete emblems and accessories, the engine compartment has been painstakingly detailed as has the fully finished trunk compartment with original trunk mat, working factory trunk light, tools and possibly the original spare white wall bias ply tire. A new Interstate ttery has been installed for this sale. The wk starts up immediately and idles perfectly.  An electric fuel pump was installed for dependability. The original locking gas cap and key are present. Only top tier co 94 octane fuel and yal Purple Synthetic oil is used while in my care.

derstood to have only three owners from new, this striking wk gives its next owner the chance to enjoy the show circuit, or take advantage of the many classic motoring opportunities afforded by its 1957 build year and highly desirable performance specification. Included are trophies from Studebaker Drivers Club regional and national shows. ng a recent professional detailing, the carpets were lifted to find original floor boards as new from the South Plant. er, the original trunk mat was lifted to find an unmolested trunk floor with the factory primer paint even under the trunk lid.
