This 1949 Buick Super is one of 1,830 Model 59 estate wagons produced for the US market for the model year and is said to have been purchased new by Wyoming State Senator Clarence Gardner before it was moved to San Diego, California, in the 1950s. The previous owner began a refurbishment that was completed after the seller acquired the car in 2017. Work is said to have included refinishing the exterior in blue, refreshing the wood panels and trim as well as the brightwork, rewiring the car with a reproduction harness, reupholstering the blue interior, replacing the gray carpeting, overhauling the brakes and suspension, and rebuilding the 248ci inline-eight and two-speed automatic transmission. Since the completion of the project the car was moved to Washington and approximately 500 miles have been added. Features include yellow fog lights, a roof rack, fishing-pole holders, and a Buick Sonomatic AM radio. This Buick Super wagon is now offered in Washington with literature, a car cover, partial records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name. The car was delivered new in Bahama Blue Metallic (02) and was refinished under current ownership. The wood cladding around the exterior was refurbished, and portions of the woodwork on the rear hatch were replaced. The brightwork was also refreshed, and the windshield has been replaced. Features include yellow-tinted fog lights, “porthole” grilles in the fenders, and a roof rack. The seller notes a paint chip on the passenger-side fender near the hood seam, and the paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Body-matching 15″ steel wheels wear Buick-stamped hubcaps as well as beauty rings and are mounted with Coker Classic whitewall tires. Under previous ownership, the brakes were overhauled, the shocks were rebuilt, and the bushings were replaced. The interior features dark blue front and rear bench seats that were reupholstered by Alan Taylor of Escondido, California. The same shop also replaced the gray carpeting, the front area of which was custom-made for the car along with a full-width mat. Wood trim lines the ceiling and pillars, and the seller notes a tear in the headliner. A Buick Sonomatic AM radio is mounted in the center of the dash, and the heater has been re-cored. The three-spoke steering wheel frames a blue dashboard housing a 110-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 73k miles, approximately 500 of which were added by the seller over the past four years. The fuel-level gauge is inaccurate and the speedometer cable has been replaced, though the seller notes that the speedometer needle still bounces. True mileage is unknown. The rear bench seat folds flat and is shown in both configurations below. The 248ci Fireball inline-eight is said to have been rebuilt along with the two-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission under previous ownership. The radiator and transmission cooler have also been refurbished. The seller notes that the transmission leaves drips when stored, and additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below. Various brochures, manuals, books, and other literature will accompany the car. A car cover is also included. Photos toward the end of the gallery show the car at different stages of the refurbishment. Numerous receipts will accompany the car along with a printed biography of Wyoming State Senator Clarence Gardner, who reportedly purchased the car when new.
