1999 BMW E39 5-Series

This 1999 BMW 540i Sport Wagon was modified during previous ownership with a 4.9-liter S62 V8, a six-speed manual transmission, and a limited-slip differential sourced from an E39 M5. The car is finished in Titanium Silver Metallic over Imola Red leather, and additional modifications include 18″ Style 65 wheels, M5-style bodywork, “angel eye” headlights, a dual exhaust system, an M-branded instrument cluster, a Dynavin infotainment system, a Z3M shifter and steering wheel, and sport seats. Work since 2021 reportedly consisted of replacing the shocks, front springs, power steering lines, trunk latch motor, and O2 sensors. This modified E39 wagon was previously sold on BaT in October 2020 and is now offered by the selling dealer with Connecticut registration. The car was finished from the factory in Titanium Silver Metallic (354) with Shadowline trim and was repainted during previous ownership following the installation of an M5-style rear diffuser, front bumper, and mirrors. An E46-style hood bulge was also added, and further exterior details include “angel eye” headlights, a sunroof, and a rear window wiper. Imperfections are noted near the edges of the hood bulge. The removed roof rails are said to be included in the sale. The Carfax report indicates that an accident occurred between February 2002 and February 2005, though no further details are provided. Style 65 18” wheels are mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires that measure 245/40 up front and 275/35 out back. The car was fitted with a re-programmed rear air suspension and adjustable Koni dampers during previous ownership. Service performed in 2021 reportedly included an overhaul of the power steering lines and replacement of the shocks and front springs. The cabin houses M5-sourced seats that have been re-trimmed in Imola Red leather along with matching door panel inserts and black carpets that were installed by AP Upholstery of San Diego, California. A Z3-spec shifter has been added, and amenities include automatic climate control, a DynaVin head unit with navigation, cruise control, aluminum accent trim, a black Alcantara headliner, and red and black Coco floor and trunk mats. The trunk hatch servo motor was reportedly replaced and the wiring repaired in January 2022. The removed factory head unit is said to be included in the sale. An M-Sport steering wheel front M-branded instrumentation that was sourced from the donor car and consists of a 185-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a variable redline, along with gauges for oil temperature, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The digital odometer shows 128k miles, which reportedly reflects driveline mileage, though total chassis mileage is unknown. The chain timing tensioners were replaced in 2019 along with the fuel pump, fuel sending unit, fuel filter, and relay. Additional work performed during previous ownership is said to include replacement of the alternator, engine mounts, idler pulley, both crank case vent hoses, spark plugs, and crankshaft seal as well as a coolant flush. The car is equipped with a dual exhaust system with a crossover mid-muffler, unmuffled rear sections, and quad outlets. High-flow catalytic converters were installed during current ownership. Two oxygen sensors were reportedly replaced in 2021. The Carfax shows the aforementioned accident along with mileage inconsistencies in 2019.
