This 1978 Lola T492 race car is reportedly one of four ordered new by Carl Haas and was later campaigned in SCCA and CRDA events throughout the US and Canada. The car was refurbished under previous ownership between 2010 and 2012 with new bodywork from Motorsport Composites, a rebuild of the 4-speed Hewland gearbox, and overhauls of the suspension and braking systems. Power is from a 2.0-liter Ford inline-four which was reportedly rebuilt in 2016 and is equipped with aluminum radiators, a dry-sump lubrication system, and a Mocal oil cooler. Purchased by the seller six months ago, this Lola was last on track in December 2018 and is now offered with logbooks since new, partial service records, spare gear sets and other parts, manuals and diagrams, and a California bill of sale. The car was refurbished under previous ownership between 2010 and 2012, with the work said to have included new steel plating on the tub, replacement of the roll bar and bracing, new skid plates, and nickel-plated bulkheads along with fresh outer tub skins. Replacement bodywork was sourced from Motorsport Composites and painted by State of Mind Customs of Pontiac, Michigan. New rain and brake lights were also installed and the car is reportedly wired for headlights, though none are fitted. New wheel bearings, hubs, and CV joints were installed during the refurbishment, and Kephos coating was applied to the uprights. The braking system features Wilwood 4-piston calipers, vented floating rotors with alloy hats, Hawk pads, two replacement master cylinders, powder coated hard lines, and a Raceparts bias adjuster. New Goodyear Eagle racing tires were mounted in 2018 and have reportedly been used in a single track outing since. The single-seat cabin is equipped with a fiberglass Lola racing seat, a MOMO steering wheel mounted on a splined quick-release hub, and a replacement dashboard housing Race Tech gauges. The seller reports that the harness will need to be replaced before the car’s next outing. Power is from a 2.0-liter Ford inline-four that was reportedly rebuilt by Elite Engines in 2016 with new rods and forged pistons. The engine is said to have three race weekends on it since the rebuild. Further equipment includes a stainless steel exhaust header, aluminum radiators, replacement water pipes, blue SAMCO hoses, a dry-sump lubrication system, a Mocal oil cooler and filter, an RGE wiring loom, and a rebuilt Fuel Safe fuel cell with a new fuel pump, lines, test port, and filter. Shifting is through a Hewland Mk9 4-speed manual gearbox which was reportedly rebuilt under previous ownership by Averill Racing Stuff with a new ring and pinion, pinion bearing, shift forks and springs, reverse idler gear, and input shaft seal. A fresh throwout bearing, clutch cylinders, and CV boots were fitted, the reverse lock-out was rebuilt, and a reinforced clutch lever arm was installed. The rear subframe is said to have been media-blasted, repaired, and powder coated during the 2010-2012 work. Suspension components installed during previous ownership include new radius rods and Aurora rod ends as well as new A-arm bearings and dust boots. The seller has provided a list of further work which is viewable in the gallery below. Logbooks dating to 1978 from the Sports Car Club of America and Waterford Hills Road Racing Inc. are included in the sale. The car’s first race was an SCCA event at Lake Erie in May 1979, and between 1980 and 1993 it competed in SCCA events in the US and CRDA events in Canada. More recently, it was campaigned in SCCA, SVRA, HSR, and VS2NA events between 2012 and 2018. The four most recent races consisted of: September 2016: SVRA Heacock Classic VIR July 2017: The Hawk at Road America November 2017: HSR Daytona Classics December 2018: AROSC California Speedway Fontana Literature includes a Hewland gearbox manual, a notebook with vehicle and setup information, and factory chassis, suspension, cooling, oil system, and electric diagrams. Along with recent service records, the seller is including the following spares in the sale: Eight additional gear sets Radiators Radius rods Three Revolution wheels Intake & carburetor Ignition cap and rotors Belts Rear hub Three brake rotors, brake pads Headlights for endurance races https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JE7oIhF-XM&feature=youtu.be A walk-around video with the engine running and revving is provided above.
