This 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S is one of just 240 Spiders built during a single year of production and is among 181 configured in left-hand drive. Chassis 1157 was completed on October 15, 1955, and is said to have spent time in two American collections before being purchased in 2004 by New Jersey collector Oscar Davis, who commissioned a refurbishment that included a color change to white over red leather. The car remained with Davis until his 2021 passing, after which it was purchased by its current owner. In 2023 the car is said to have received an Award of Merit in its class at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance before being selected for display at the Biltmore Hotel Miami Coral Gables by the 1000 Miglia and the Italian Consulate General to celebrate the announcement of upcoming US-based events. Power is provided by a 2,451cc V6 that breathes through a single Weber 40 DCZ5 carburetor and is paired with a rear-mounted four-speed manual transaxle. Additional features include sliding-pillar front suspension, a De Dion rear axle, hydraulic drum brakes with inboard rear units, red-painted wheels, and a black convertible top. This B24S Spider America is now offered by the current owner’s dealership with invoices from the last two years, historical certificates, and a clean Florida title. The B24 Spider variant of the Aurelia was introduced at the 1955 Brussels Motor Show featuring Pinin Farina-designed coachwork over a shortened version of the chassis utilized by the fourth-series Aurelia GT coupe, with which the Spider also shared its mechanical underpinnings. Offered in either right- or left-hand drive, the Spider was produced for a single year only before being succeeded by the more conventionally appointed B24 convertible. Originally finished in Grigio, this example wore a repaint in silver prior to being purchased by its previous owner and subsequently refinished in its current shade of white. Styling elements include a panoramic windshield, shallow doors free of exterior handles, two-piece bumpers, and an intake scoop allowing a lower hood line. Pitting of the chrome on areas of the front bumpers is shown up close in the photo gallery below. A reproduction period Italian license plate was fitted to the rear of the car in 2023. The wheels were refinished in red under previous ownership and wear bright hubcaps and beauty rings, while 165R400 Michelin X tires are mounted at each corner. Nicks on one of the wheels were touched up in 2023, at which time “Lancia” lettering was hand-painted on each hubcap atop the corresponding embossed script. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes with inboard rear units, and service in 2023 included adjustment of the front shoes. The cabin houses a pair of bucket seats that were re-trimmed in red leather under previous ownership, while matching upholstery covers the dash edge, kick panels, and portions of the door panels. Features include black rubber floor mats, door pull straps, a shifter to the right of the center tunnel, a lockable glovebox, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and a radio blanking plate. The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and a combination gauge monitoring oil pressure and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 72k miles, approximately 1,500 of which have been added under current ownership. A VDO coolant temperature gauge is mounted to the driver’s right under the dash. The 2,451cc V6 is an evolution of the Francesco de Virgilio-designed power plant that made the Aurelia the first V6-powered production car and features a 60° angle between cylinder banks, an aluminum block, aluminum cylinder heads with hemispherical combustion chambers, and pushrod-driven overhead valves. Induction is through a single Weber DCZ5 downdraft carburetor fed through a dual-snorkel air intake. The upper radiator hose, fan belt, and fuel-line clamps were replaced during a freshening by D.L. George Historic Motorcars in Cochranville, Pennsylvania, in 2023, at which time the brake fluid reservoir and air-cleaner hardware were refinished and the fluids were changed. An updated voltage regulator was also fitted under the dash. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted four-speed manual transaxle, and work in 2022 included the replacement of the clutch, pilot bearing, and release bearing. The sliding-pillar independent front suspension incorporates coil springs and adjustable shocks contained in oil around vertical pins on either end of a beam axle, while the rear suspension shares the De Dion axle that was introduced on all fourth-series Aurelias. The Lancia Classiche Certificato di Origine lists the original color combination of gray over orange leather as well as a production date of October 15, 1955.
