This 1956 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari station wagon was acquired by the seller in 2012 and subsequently underwent a cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment which reportedly included stripping and refinishing the exterior in two-tone Camellia Coral and Sun Beige, re-chroming the bumpers, and replacing the windshield and windows. Power is provided by a 389ci V8 and a four-speed automatic transmission that are said to have been sourced from a 1959 Pontiac and overhauled during the refurbishment. Equipment includes a brown and white interior, 15″ steel wheels with whitewall tires and polished covers, an AM radio, a driver-side spotlight, and a carpeted cargo area. This Safari wagon is now offered with Alabama registration in the seller’s name. The car is said to have been disassembled and stripped before being refinished in Sun Beige over Camellia Coral during the refurbishment commissioned under current ownership. Features include chrome-finished bumpers, side moldings, and window trim as well as a spotlight, rear-wheel skirts, fender-mounted front turn signals, and polished dual exhaust outlets. The seller states the windows and seals were replaced during the refurbishment. Factory 15″ steel wheels are fitted with polished covers and wear BFGoodrich Silvertown Radial whitewall tires. Work performed during the refurbishment is said to have included rebuilding the power steering pump and brake assembly as well as replacing the leaf springs, front brake rotors, and brake pads. The cabin is trimmed in brown and white upholstery with a matching dashboard, carpets, and door panels. Equipment includes an AM radio, a carpeted rear cargo area, and lap belts. A two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 120-mph speedometer. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 73k miles, and total mileage is unknown. The replacement 389ci V8 is said to have been sourced from a 1959 Pontiac and was reportedly overhauled during current ownership. Additional work performed is said to have included re-coring the radiator and installing a stainless-steel exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed Hydramatic transmission reportedly sourced from a 1959 Pontiac. The rear differential is said to have been rebuilt and the fuel tank and lines were replaced during the refurbishment. Additional underside photos can be seen in the gallery below. The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on its registration.
