1959 Mercedes-Benz Ponton

This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S convertible underwent a refurbishment in the late 1980s, which included a repaint in light blue and reupholstering the interior in beige leather. Power is provided by a 2.2-liter inline-six mated to a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission, and equipment includes a dark blue convertible soft top, 14″ steel wheels with hubcaps, power-assisted brakes, driving lights, wrap-around chrome bumpers, fender-mounted turn signals, an AM/FM radio, a dash-mounted clock, and a heater. This W180 cabriolet was purchased by the seller in 2023 and is now offered with the owner’s manual, spare parts, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name. The W180 “Ponton” models featured Pontoon-style bodywork with integrated fenders and a unit-body chassis design. This example was finished from the factory in Light Blue (356) and is said to have been repainted in 1988. The dark blue convertible soft top was replaced in the early 2000s, and additional equipment includes a beige convertible top boot, wrap-around chrome bumpers with overriders, bright-finished trim, driving lights, fender-mounted turn signals, and a driver-side mirror. The seller notes signs of previous frame repair, and cracking and chips in the paint finish are shown up close in the photos provided below. Steel 14″ wheels wear bright-finished hubcaps with body-color centers and are mounted with Premium Sport whitewall tires. The suspension includes a double-wishbone front setup and a single-joint rear swing axle as well as front and rear coil springs. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted drum brakes at all four corners. The cabin features seating surfaces and door panels that were reportedly reupholstered in beige leather in the late 1980s, and wood trim accents the dash, door panels, and windshield surround. Appointments include vent windows, an AM/FM radio, a dash-mounted clock, a glovebox, and a heater. The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a sweeping 110-mph speedometer with auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 96k miles, approximately a handful of which were added under current ownership. The 2.2-liter M180 inline-six features dual Solex carburetors and was factory rated at 106 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque. The fuel tank was drained and cleaned in preparation for the sale. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission. Corrosion is noted on underside components.
