This 1964 Ford Thunderbird convertible was acquired by the seller in 2022 following multiple generations of past family ownership. It has received interior and exterior refurbishments beginning in the early 2000s and is now finished in red over black leather upholstery. Powered by a 390ci V8 mated to a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission, the car is equipped with a power-retractable white soft top, a rear-seat tonneau cover, 15″ wire wheels, rear fender skirts, quad headlights, shell-contour front bucket seats, power windows, a swing-away steering wheel, a cassette stereo, and a MagicAire heater/defroster. This Thunderbird is now offered with a Washington title in the seller’s name. There were approximately 9,200 convertible Thunderbirds produced for the 1964 model year. This example was delivered from the factory in Samoan Coral and was refinished in red in 2005. Features include a hard double-hump tonneau cover, a power-retractable white soft top, a wrap-around chrome-finished front bumper, quad headlights, gun-sight front turn signals, rear fender skirts, and a chrome pinched-loop-style rear bumper. The soft top hydraulic system was replaced in 2014. Chrome-plated 15″ wire wheels wear knock-off-style hubs and are mounted with American Classic whitewall tires measuring 215/75. The car came equipped from the factory with power steering, and stopping power is provided by power-assisted drum brakes at each corner. The tires were replaced and a brake service was completed in 2019. The cabin features black leather over the shell-contour front bucket seats and curved rear bench. Amenities include a power-adjustable driver seat, front and rear center armrests, power windows, an aftermarket cassette stereo, and a MagicAire heater/defroster. The seats, door panels, and carpets were refurbished in 2014. The two-spoke steering wheel is mounted to a swing-away column and frames a horizontal-sweep 120-mph speedometer and gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 81k miles, approximately 50 of which were added under current ownership. The 390ci V8 is fitted with a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 300 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque. The exhaust system was replaced in 2011, and the battery was replaced in 2022. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission, which has a fluid leak. The data plate shown above decodes as follows: Body 76A – Thunderbird convertible Color L – Samoan Coral paint Trim 56 – Black vinyl upholstery Date 28A – January 28 build date DSO 72 – San Jose ordering district Axle 1 – 3.00:1 standard rear axle Trans 4 – Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission The Washington title carries a “Classic” brand, and it indicates that use tax was waived as a result of the owner receiving the vehicle as a gift.
