For decades, Jeep CJs have been the canvas of off-roaders’ creations and this souri-based 1981 Jeep CJ5 4×4 is just that. It has a modified AMC V8 engine, according to the seller, along with a 4-inch lift, 35-inch-tall tires and more—enhancements all intended to make this Jeep very capable for crawling or swamping with its locking front and rear axles and 4.10 gears. This Jeep is also said to have its original interior and the body is said to be “99.9 percent rust-free.” The seller is acting as a broker for the Jeep’s owner and it will be sold on a rebuilt title.

ing to the seller, the engine in this CJ-5 is a non-original 401-cu.in. OHV V8 that features a number of performance upgrades, including an lbrock intake manifold and four-barrel carburetor, along with ker headers, a camshaft, lory ignition, roller rockers, a 94-amp alternator, and more. The rebuild was reportedly started in 1992 and has about 1,000 miles on it. The engine also reportedly starts and runs well, with no smoke. There are no reported leaks, either. cent work has reportedly included replacement of the fuel tank and fuel lines. The 401 is mated to a T-176 four-speed manual transmission that features a s heavy-duty clutch and pressure plate. It reportedly shifts well, but with 4.10 gears, the seller admits speed is not this Jeep’s strongest suit. A recent replacement of the steering shaft has also made it more street drivable.

Per the seller, this CJ5’s body and white paint are believed original from its 1992 rebuild, apart from a repaint of the hood. An toCheck report shows the vehicle was involved in a front-end collision in early 1992. The paintwork is said to be in good shape for its age and while there are a few scratches and paint chips here and there, there are no dents or other significant blemishes. The seller also says the body is “essentially rust-free,” with some surface corrosion on the Smittybilt rear bumper. The exterior trim appears in very good shape, and so does the windshield. The top and door fabric are said to be in great overall condition, the plastic window film on the top is quite cloudy, the plastic on the doors is very clear, says the seller. The Jeep also comes with a BesTop top and doors that are not shown. All exterior lights, including the aftermarket spotlights, are said to be functional.

The interior of this Jeep is reportedly original, right down to the blue canvas-style seat covers. They are said to be in good overall condition but show some age-related wear and one prominent crack on the driver’s seat cover. There’s a rear seat in this Jeep, too, but it has not been bolted down, reportedly because of the carpet and underlying rubber mat. The carpet itself is reportedly in great condition. All the interior trim elements are intact, says the seller, with the turn signal stalk reportedly in need of a new rubber cover. All the gauges are described in working order and an aftermarket steering wheels was a recent addition. This Jeep has an admittedly older aftermarket cassette deck that remains functional.

The chassis, suspension, and brake components are said to be in good condition, with the seller noting the Jeep was built for crawling and swamping, with most of the work was performed during the Jeep’s build in 1992. Also noting the Jeep does not have power steering or brakes. The Jeep can be driven on city streets but probably not the highway. The work also included a 4-inch lift with rubber spacer bushings that are said to remain in great shape. This Jeep tackles the terrain on 35-inch-tall r Swamper tires mounted on chrome steel wheel. The wheels show their age with surface corrosion, while the tires are admittedly old, show dry-rot cracking, and should be replaced. Their DOT date codes are not discernable in the photos.

The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a rebuilt title in the owner’s name. The seller is assisting the owner, with his permission, to get the vehicle listed online. Additional documentation for this 1981 Jeep CJ5 4×4 includes receipts for the work performed on it dating back to 1992, along with an toCheck report showing the front-end collision. Built for swamping and crawling, it would likely need a some updates to make it highway-capable, but it appears to be a solid and capable off-roader with classic CJ style. “It’s very clean and in fantastic condition,” says the seller.
